Human rights are the basic entitlements that belong to all of us because we are human beings.
As human beings, we have basic entitlements, including the right to be treated equally, to be safe from violence and abuse, to be part of a family and to have our privacy respected. In certain circumstances, some rights may be limited. However, this must be necessary and reasonable and there must be clear reasons for the decision.
Your rights and their maintenance and protection are fundamental to the delivery of our service. We encourage all people to become familiar with and understand all relevant charters as we incorporate the charters in all aspects of our service delivery.
People with a disability have the same rights as other people in their community. They have the right to freedom, respect, equality and dignity. They have the right to fulfil their potential, to exercise control over their own lives, and to live free from abuse, neglect, violence and preventable injury. People with a disability are some of the most vulnerable people in our society, therefore specific laws are in place that protect the rights of people with a disability.
These include the :
- U.N Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities 2007
- Victorian charter of human rights & responsibilities
- Victorian disability act 2006
- National Disability Insurance Scheme 2013
