What is Psychosocial Recovery Coaching (PRC)?

A Psychosocial Recovery Coach is a NDIS support person who works alongside you to help you build confidence, strengthen everyday skills, and work towards the life you want. They focus on your goals, your strengths, and what recovery means to you, while helping you connect with supports, community, and opportunities that matter to you.

Recovery Coaching is about building your capacity and supporting your independence at a pace that feels right for you.

Recovery Coaching is based on recovery-oriented practice, which means recognising that recovery looks different for everyone. Your coach will work with you in a way that respects your choices, builds on your strengths, supports hope, and helps you grow your confidence and independence at a pace that feels right for you.

Recovery-orientated practice

Recovery-oriented practice encapsulates support that:

  • recognises and embraces the possibilities for recovery and wellbeing created by the inherent strength and capacity of all people experiencing mental health issues
  • maximises self-determination and self-management of mental health and wellbeing
  • responds to gender, sexuality, culture, family and community
  • assists families to understand the challenges and opportunities arising from their family member’s experiences.”

A process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.

Subject to the preferences of each person, the responsibilities of the recovery coach should
include:

  • developing recovery-enabling relationships, based on hope
  • supporting the person with their recovery planning
  • coaching to increase recovery skills and personal capacity, including motivation,
    strengths, resilience and decision-making
  • collaborating with the broader system of supports to ensure supports are recovery oriented
  • supporting engagement with the NDIS, including support with plan implementation
  • documentation and reporting.
